Quarter budget, and a potential constitutional change.

the Drewel campaign, meeting with other candidates for office, and the AFL/CIO
Convention United Way Labor Liaison Bill Borders spoke about the Saturn Toy
Drive, the KSER program on Initiative 695. He praised Darrell Chapman for the
excellent job he did moderating the program on Initiative 695. He also thanked
Chuck Jewell for his continued help with the food bank fundraising. Don Shove
and members of IAM 751 were thanked for helping out on a recent project to build
a fence for a family with an autistic child. That fence was followed by a
similar build by Bob Monize and the Laborers 292 with supplies donated by
the.Home Depot . The next KSER FM, Radio Labor Journal, Nov. 9th 4:30 to 5:30
PM, and will cover the WTO.
COMMITTEES
Community
Services-Jackie Boschok, IAM 751F, noted that Christmas raffle tickets are out.
The Christmas Party will be Dec. 22nd. Ticket printing was donated by Creative
Printing. Delegates were encouraged to bring donated ornaments after
Thanksgiving for Christmas tree in Labor Temple. The committee will be adopting
three families for Christmas this year.
Workers
Memorial-Sec Treas. Sells discussed their last two meetings, the efforts to
build business partnerships, and potential costs for a memorial for workers
killed on the job to be placed at the County Courthouse.
REPORTS
FROM COMMUNITY/LABOR COMMITTEE REPS
One
Stop Employment Centers-Don Shove, IAM 751A reported that the new employment
center would be working out of the Employment Security Building in Everett until
the new buildings are built. They will be in Everett and south county.
WISHA
Monitoring-Tom Plummer, IAM 751A, spoke to a letter from State federation
regarding ergonomic standard regulations. It seems that
some cities have written letters asking for no rules. Letters need to go
out from locals with copies to Gary Moore, Dir of the DlnI.
School/Work-Ed
Triezenberg noted that there was a kick-off event on Oct. 22nd. SnoNet is in
control of the computer matches system. Get on the matches data base to speak on
labor issues. Once your on it, you will get calls from schools.
COPE
Curt
Williams, SEIU 1199NW, spoke about the Deana Knutsen campaign for the Stevens
Hospital Board. Her opponent has no experience in health, yet the Everett Herald
endorsed her stating that the union already had one Board member. As Curt,
pointed out, the union does not control or own Board members. They have endorsed
and supported candidates, but those Board members represent the interests of the
whole community. For the Herald to make such a statement was a gross attack on
the entire labor movement. Ms. Knutsen’s opponent has raised $11,000, an
unheard of amount in a hospital board campaign. Management, meanwhile, is
twisting arms for more money. As a result she has gotten got a lot of money to
do mailings. Meanwhile, the Knutsen campaign has had over 50 people volunteer in
campaign. She has raised $4,000. SEIU has open time to call over 8,000 people
this weekend from the mobile phone center, and people are needed to add to the
volunteers. The calling is in downtown Seattle. Another $500.00 is needed to pay
for phoning costs. Friday evening and Saturday morning are the calling times.

BUSINESS

REPORTS
OF UNIONS
Organizing
reports-Curt Williams, SEIU 1199NW, reported that as high as 25% raises were
given to folks while the organizing campaign was going on at Medalia. Thus the
campaign was stymied. They have told employees they would be interested when
they want to discuss unionization further.
Ed Triezenberg, UBC 562, discussed the Osborn campaign. They won the election, but the company is fighting it. Ted Hudlow noted a lot of layoffs had occurred at the company, but all of them have been put to work.
IAM
130- Dwayne Lane Chevrolet machinists have voted to have union representation.
Contract
Negotiations-Curt Williams, SEIU 1199NW, stated that Stevens Hospital and SEIU
had set a mutual October 4th deadline to resolve contract. The employer has a
$1.5 million budget item for marketing, yet rejects a wage package that is only
$300,000. It appears that capturing market share is more important than quality
care. The hospital has even hired staff that are under 18 to work in radiology
lab, which is not legal. The turnover is high due to low wages. The hospital now
wants to put off negotiations until after the election is over. The union has
reached out to the community, and gotten support for workers.
He discussed their recent candle light event.
Local
activities-Bob Monize, LIUNA 292 discussed the memorial service for Kim Vendl,
the flagger killed recently when run over by a dump truck. He also noted that
there is a funeral service this Friday for a Bellingham member killed in his
truck. Laura Wentworth, IBT 38 thanked Bob Monize for the service he put
together. Ed Triezenberg, UBC 562 seconded the comments on getting out better
information on worker deaths to the media. Rod Mendenhall, IBT 38, noted that
the surviving spouses father was a retired Teamster, brother UPS worker. Chuck
Jewell, IBT 38 was thanked for helping the family disperse the ashes.
NEW
BUSINESS M/S/C to pass Resolution
99-7
Snohomish
County Labor Council
Resolution
99-7
Rule
Changes Enabling Flaggers To Have Rear Vision
Whereas,
Laborers Local 292 member and flagger Kim Vendl was killed while holding a
stop/slow sign when a dump truck backed over her.
Whereas,
she was unable to see the truck coming, as it was at her back and she was facing
traffic with her sign.
Whereas,
the signs are not equipped to give the flagger a quick view as to what is behind
them, and the signs construction are stipulated by OSHA/WISHA rules.
Be
It Resolved, that the Snohomish County Labor Council request that the Washington
State Labor Council and AFL/CIO pursue the changing of regulations, so that
slow/stop signs may be equipped with rearview mirrors, or an equivalent device,
that will give ‘flaggers’ adequate warning as to what may be coming from
behind their backs.
GOOD
OF THE COUNCIL
Pres.
Darr reported on the Rodney Slater, Sec. of Transportation, meeting in Everett
and the bus ride. WTO issues were discussed, as well as transportation problems.
Rod Mendenhall, IBT 38 discussed his concern with
the last minute invitations. Pres. Darr thanked Jeff Soth for his letter
to AWC regarding ergonomic issues. AWC
Executive Director has gone out on his own without policy authorization to
oppose ergonomic rules. Chuck Jewell asked that the office sign be updated. The
Sec. Treas. noted that he would have it done. Val Stone, endorsed candidate for
County Clerk, thanked the Council for its endorsement. She expressed the
importance to her of the union members in that office that asked her to run.
Laura Wentworth, IBT 38, expressed her concern about the new opening of a Wal
Mart on 164th. She asked that we do not shop Wal-Mart.
John
Scott, CWA 37082, is now working full time for the WFT. He is doing organizing
and training. He noted that the activism of the SCLC had inspired him. Jeff
Seibert, IBEW 191, noted that in recent hirings the new Staples store in
Marysville has been showing employees an hour long video on how bad unions are.
He asked if anyone could check on proposed legislation that moved mitigation
fees from small to large cities. Bill Borders, SEIU 120, suggested that Exec Bd
develop a policy regarding how it responds to workers being killed on the job.
Two events were announced: 1. At the home of Helen Jackson, Oct. 28th 6 to 8 PM
to celebrate County Executive Bob Drewel’s accomplishments on behalf of women
and families 2. Nov 2nd election
night hospitality at the Henry Jackson Suite of the Howard Johnsons Hotel with
the Bob Drewel campaign.
The
meeting was adjourned at 9 PM
