Minutes of January 24th 2018 SCLC Delegates Meeting

 

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by President Jason Redrup. The Pledge of Allegiance was held and the PresidentÕs Message was read

A motion was made to approve the minutes from the previous meeting. The motion passed a vote of the body.

Guest:

 

Joe Downs from Senator Maria CantwellÕs office gave a report on bills of interest going before congress: which includes a bill exempting employees on tribal lands from the NLRA, a bill reducing overtime protections that was originally introduced by the Bush administration. Both of those billsÕ Senator Cantwell opposes. Another bill introduced by Senator Murry, the ÒPay Check Fairness ActÓ Senator Cantwell has also signed on as a sponsor. Joe added that Senator Cantwell introduced an apprenticeship bill that would give a $5,000.00 tax credit. Joe added his job is to be the Liaison for this part of the Senators district and he was leaving contact cards so if anyone wanted info on any bills they could contact him.

 

Victor Harris from the Snohomish County Democrats spoke and encouraged the delegateÕs to become PCOÕs.

 

A five minute break was taken so the delegates could talk to the Guest.

 

Officers Reports

 

President Jason Redup:  Reported that we will be sending out a letter to make sure we have accurate and updated delegate list.

He added he went to the State of the City address by Mayor Cassie Franklin.

 

Secretary Treasurer Leonard Kelley: Reminded everyone that this Friday night is Solidarity Night at the Silvertips and we had sold 1650 tickets so far. He encouraged everyone to go back to their Unions and encouraged members to wear Union attire to the game. He also reported on classes that the WSLC puts on to help union members that are interested in running for office adding that it is very important that we have pro-labor people in all forms of elected office and that information was available in the back of the room or on website.

 

Secretary Treasurer also reported that the next education committee meeting will be held on February 28th at 5:00 PM right before our delegated meeting. The education committee has been instrumental in putting together our booths at the fairs and our training classes and that the committee is looking for new members so please show up if youÕre interested.

 

Leonard added that he had several request over the last few years to have a Labor Day parade. He then shared an article for the Everett Herald that referenced Labor Day activities from the past and how itÕs not celebrated like it used to be. He announced a committee was being formed to put together a Labor Day parade In Everett and if it was going to be successful on any level, we need participation from a lot of the affiliates. A signup sheet was available for interested parties.

 

Reports of Unions

 

Teresa Johnson (IBEW 89):  Reported that on December 28th they ratified their contract with Frontier Communications with an 85% yes vote.

 

Jim Decarro (IBEW 46):  reported that their static communications contract went to a strike authorization vote and passed by 94%. He added several actions were planned.

 

Jim Shannon (SEIU 1199 NW):  Reported that they had a 3 day strike in December, with 75% participation from the employees and received a lot of support from the affiliates, which included financial support and they wanted to thank everyone. He added they had met with the employer last week and that they had a better response, giving them hope.

 

Terry Van Wyck (AFSCME):  Reported her local and other AFSCME locals were meeting her and starting to coordinate efforts for contract negotiations with the County next year.

 

Debbie Gath (IBT 38): Reported that they were going to Olympia tomorrow to advocate for noncompeting legislation.

 

New Business

 

Nominations for officers were held and there were no new nominations added to the list from the nominations that were held in December. All positions that were open had one nomination for each. A motion was made to accept the nominations by acclaimation.

 

A vote was held and passed unanimously electing:

The newly elected officers were sworn in by Secretary Treasurer Kelley.

 

There were no reports under Good of the Order and a motion was made to adjourn, a vote was taken and the meeting was adjourned at 6:53 PM.
