Minutes of the Meeting of April 27, 2005

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:07 PM by President Chapman following the Annual Workers Memorial Commemoration at the Snohomish County Courthouse from 5 PM to 6 PM. Delegates recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as typed and handed out.

Mike Town presented information on an Educational Center to be built with the new Brightwater facility. He was requesting support from the Council. The Executive Board will look at a resolution at the May meeting. The money for it would come out of mitigation expenses for the project.

 

EXECUTIVE BOARD and STAFF REPORT

 

            The Executive Board did not meet in April.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

Community Services—Suzanne Moreau, Puget Sound Labor Agency Director, thanked SPEEA members for their efforts on helping to raise funds during the Workers Memorial with the bottled water sales. The next big event is the Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 14th. Volunteers are needed to help unload trucks at post offices. Nominations are also needed for the Spirit of Labor Award that will be given out by United Way on June 9th at the Lynnwood Convention Center during their annual breakfast, 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM.

            Don Shove, IAM 751 stated that the committee had met and elected officers. They are: President: Don Shove, IAM 751, Vice - President: Chris Glenn, SPEEA, Secretary-Treasurer: Jason Redrup, IAM 751. He also reminded delegates of the barbecue before the next meeting and thanked SPEEA for sponsoring it.

 

Organizing-Paul Quaintance, UFCW 1105, discussed activities in north Snohomish County with regards to Wal Mart.

 

Workers Memorial-The chair thanked all those involved in the Workers Memorial commemoration.

REPORTS OF UNIONS

 

Organizing Reports-Leonard Kelley, IBT 38, gave an update on activity in organizing DHL drivers in north Snohomish County and Wal Mart activities. There will be meeting for activists on May 2nd at the Arlington Boys and Girls Club at 6 PM with regards to Wal Mart.

 

Contract Negotiations- Vernon Huffman, IATSE 15, stated that the local was in the early stages of negotiations with the Everett Events Center over technical worker contracts.

            Randy Kurtz, WFSE 948, reported that their State Employee contracts had been approved by the legislature. It will begin on July 1st. They are busy signing up new members.

GOOD OF THE ORDER

 

            State Representative, Mike Sells, gave the delegates an update on the recent legislative session, and presented information on the transportation and capital budgets.

            Ed Triezenberg, UBC 562, talked about the impact that Governor Gregoire had in the legislature this past session and the need for supporting her in the upcoming court cases. It will cost around $1.5 million to deal with the issue.

            Jim Smith, LIUNA 292, reminded delegates of the Radio Labor Journal on KSER FM, 90.7, every 4th Monday of the month at 4:30 PM. The show is always looking for stories.

            Dave Brueher, IAM 751C, reported on the Guide Dogs of America motorcycle ride that is coming up on June 11th  sponsored by Machinists District 751. The participants will begin the ride at 8:30 AM (last bike out at 10:30 AM) at the Frasiers Bar & Grill at 1010 N. Broadway. For further information visit the website: www.puppyputt.com
