Community Services Judy Neumann, IAM 751F, thanked SEIU 925 Seattle staff for donating $50.00 to the RAMP program. She reminded the delegates of the upcoming Letter Carrier Food drive on Saturday, May 10, 2003. Union members and their families are needed to help volunteer, and can do so by contacting United Way Labor Liaison Bill Borders at 425-921-3454. United Way of Snohomish County stepped up and provided $5,000 to complete the effort to secure funding for the food bank collection bags. Laborers 292 also contributed $500.00 to the printing of the bags. The goal for the drive this year is 400,000 lbs, which would help feed 30,000 to 40,000 people. Snohomish County ranked first nationwide for the most food collected by an NALC branch of similar size in the U.S. She thanked those that supported RAMP. They currently have 15 ramps on hold waiting for funds to build them. Anyone wishing to help with volunteering or wanting to contribute, please contact Bill Borders, or Jerry Otis at 425-775-9742.
Workers Memorial This year’s Worker Memorial Commemoration is currently being planned by the Workers Memorial Committee: Shari Purves-Reiter, Department of Labor & Industries, Bob Rommel, SPEEA; Toni Bohan, SEIU 925; Bill Borders, United Way Labor Liaison and Mike Sells, SCLC Sec. Treas. The event will be Monday, April 28th at 5:30 PM with a march from the Everett Labor Temple leaving at 5:10 PM
Organizing-.Liz Brown, Pacific NW News Guild reported that the Herald in Everett fired two workers identified as leaders in two separate attempts to organize unaffiliated employees at the newspaper. Last year an organizing drive led by a reporter ended abruptly when the campaign leader was fired by the newspaper. In January, the company fired an employee in advertising after he organized a meeting with more than 20 employees. The NLRB has an investigator look at the first termination, but the local did not file a charge on the second terminated employee because the investigator did not want them to do so.
Contract negotiations and maintenance-Jim Triezenberg, IAM 130 reported on the strike occurring at Dwayne Lane auto dealerships. The issues are pensions, open shop demands by the company, wages and duration. He thanked the UPS/Teamster members for honoring the picket lines. IAM 751 stewards are expected out on Saturday to join the picket lines.
Other Reports Doug Rice, UFCW 1105 spoke about working to provide support for member’s families who have been called up for the Iraq conflict.
Kent Hansen, AFSCME 1811S, reported that his local had donated $100.00 to the VOA foodbank
Ed Triezenberg, Carpenters 562, reported on a project that he is working on with the Tulalip Tribes TERO office. The TERO office is circulating a petition requesting consideration of a prevailing wage statute on tribal lands, and when completed it will go to the tribal council. Ed asked that any locals who have tribal members make them aware of the petition so that they can participate.
The
Executive Board, by e mail polling, is recommended the granting of strike sanction
to IAM District 160 and Local 130 against Dwayne Lane Chrysler, Plymouth, Jeep
and Dwayne Lane Dodge. M/S/C to concur.
Bob Wold
of Home Street Bank Loan Officer promoted the AFL/CIO Housing Investment
Trust mortgage program. Mortgage rates are kept at lower levels with union
pension funds and also reduces loan fees. Home Street Bank is a local, family
owned company. Bob’s office is in Mountlake Terrace. They provide down payment
assistance through the Home Ownership Opportunity program.
Kent Hanson, introduced
himself as President of AFSCME 1811S and Past President of AFSCME 1811C. He
noted that he had been a delegate for 13 years, and that his commitment to
labor has been “longstandingly” clear. He announced his candidacy for Snohomish
County Assessor and will be looking for the support of the Snohomish County
Labor Council. His outlined his vision for the office as one of supporting
labor.
Cindy Portmann, candidate for Snohomish County Assessor, was introduced and discussed her qualifications for that office. She entered the Assessor’s office in an entry level position and was a member AFSCME 1811C. She eventually became chief deputy, and has enjoyed an excellent relation with labor. She would like to continue to work for the citizens of this county, and the people in the office. Her vision is to help improve the property tax system, while working with the citizens of the county to help gain a broader understanding of how the tax system works. She is seeking the endorsement of the Labor Council.
David Simpson announced his candidacy for Everett City Council, Position 5. He thanked the Labor Council for their past support of his campaign for re-election to Position 1, and noted that he was proud of the involvement of labor. “As a former City Council member you know where I stand. Tonight, announcing candidacy for Everett City Council, Position 5, I will be seeking your support,” he stated. He went on to note that he enjoyed serving the citizens of Everett. He is currently on the Planning Commission, the Government Affairs Committee of the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Campfire. He is a member of the Navy League and proud to be a member of SPEEA.
Doug Campbell discussed his candidacy for re-election to the Everett City Council, Position 5. He is just finishing his 12th year in office. He has appreciated the Labor Council’s support in the past. Over the last 12 years, he feels that the city has done a good job on holding on and maintaining a budget in Everett. What that has done for Everett is keep employees from losing jobs. There is a lot of economic development going on—first a new transit center, a new building that is a block up from the Labor Temple to spur more development. He stated that the city has put together a really aggressive program on economic development. As a result, he stated, “I think you will find that unions in the city will find that I have been there for them.” He cited upcoming work on the 41st Street overpass and the California Street overpass. He also noted work to maintain the Navy base and keep it from closure.
Jim Smith, LIUNA promoted the KSER Radio Labor Journal, 2nd Tuesday, every month at 4:30 PM on 90.7 FM.
