The meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM by President Chapman followed by the flag salute. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as typed and handed out.

EXECUTIVE BOARD REPORT Minutes of the Executive Board meeting of December 12th were distributed. The Board had met with a representative of Everett School levy and discussed the Edmonds School levy. Delegates were given written information on both school levies. Action on the levies and bonds were referred to the Executive Board for action. The Executive Board also recommended the following resolution:
New Era Cap Resolution
WHEREAS, the Snohomish County Labor Council, AFL/CIO affirms the rights of all workers to be treated with justice, dignity, and respect, and
WHEREAS, New Era Cap Company produces all the on-field caps for Major and Minor League baseball, and also manufactures camps for the NBA, NFL, NHL, PGA, Little League, and a number of colleges and universities, and
WHEREAS, New Era operates a plant in Derby, New York, and
WHEREAS, those workers have been on strike since July 16, 2001, with negotiations being stalled, and
WHEREAS, it has been verified by an independent monitoring agency, The Workers Rights Consortium, that workers at the Derby plant have suffered workplace injuries, including Musculo-Skeletal Disorders, repetitive motion injuries, needle punctures, and blood contamination, and
WHEREAS, The Workers Rights Consortium has also verified that there is substantial evidence that New Era has not provided medical and wage benefits to some injured workers, and
WHEREAS, during contract negotiations New Era proposed to cut wages by 40 percent and reduce mid-year bonus by 83 percent, and
WHEREAS, this comes as the Derby plant's workers have not received a raise in three years, get paid between $245 and $329 per month for family health care, and receive no pension plan - all the while making on average only $12.14 per hour, and
WHEREAS, in the midst of negotiations, on January 5th, New Era announced the layoff of 125 CWA workers at the Derby plant, and
WHEREAS, the work these union members were performing is being sent to a non-union plant in the City of Buffalo and to two non-union plants in Alabama, and
WHEREAS, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 14177 represents 320 workers at said plant, and
WHEREAS, The Workers Rights Consortium has verified evidence that New Era has engaged in a persistent pattern of non-compliance with workers' rights of association and rights of collective bargaining, including repeated threats to close the Derby plant and managers physically menacing female workers in response to workers' support of the union, and
WHEREAS, the Communications Workers of America has requested a boycott of all New Era products until a new contract is signed;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Snohomish County Labor Council, AFL/CIO endorses the boycott of all New Era Cap Company products until such time as a contract is signed between CWA and the company, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this organization will work among its constituency and community allies to mobilize support for the workers at the New Era Cap Company's Derby plant, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that certified copies of this resolution be sent to New Era Cap Company CEO David Koch, New Era Cap Company President Christopher Koch (8061 Erie Road, Derby, NY 14047), and Communications Workers of America, Local 14177 President Jane Howald (7455 Erie Road, Derby, NY 14047)

Secretary-Treasurer Sells reported that one other nomination for the position of Trustee #1 had been received via e mail from delegate Dave Chambers of IBT 763 for Kirk Stephenson of IBT 763. It was M/S/C to accept the nomination. A call was made by Vice President Wentworth for any further nominations for offices of President, and Trustees 1, 3, 5, and 6. No further nominations were made. GOOD OF THE ORDER
Pam Daniels, member of the Edmonds School Levy Committee, spoke about
the Edmonds School Levy and Bond. The levy will maintain current levels of maintenance
and operation funding and does not represent an increase. They are seeking two
bonds. One is for capital needs, and the other is a technology levy to update
computers, network access and data bandwidth.
Mary Hale, AFT 4254, noted her retirement as of January 4th, and that
she would be saying good bye as a delegate. She also stated how much she had
enjoyed working with the Labor Council and its delegates.
Bruce Spalding of IAM 751 reported on Jo Marie Schultz, and how she is
persevering. He was encouraged by her attitude in dealing with some recent health
issues.
Ed Triezenberg, Carpenters 562, thanked President Chapman and Secretary-Treasurer
Sells for their testimony at a hearing before the County Council this morning
on apprenticeship set asides for County construction. The action to create the
set asides passed 5-0.
Chris Glenn, SPEEA, noted the information on the Martin Luther King,
Jr. Community Celebration on January 17th at the Everett Historic Theatre from
11:30 AM to 1 PM
Toni Bohan, SEIU 925, requested that the date for the 2002 Workers Memorial
be pinned down early.
Kent Hanson, AFSCME 1811S, spoke as Chair of the Snohomish County Democrats
and thanked the Council for its hard work in the recent elections.
