Minutes of the Meeting of September 22, 2004

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by President Chapman followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as corrected with noting that the minutes of the July 28, 2004 meeting has also been approved.

 

CREDENTIALS

 

 

No new delegates were present

 

GUESTS:

 

Dave Gossett, County Councilman, spoke about a discount prescription drug card that could be offered to Snohomish County residents. It can be given to any citizen in the county. They are currently working it through the county to see if it is possible.

            David Simpson, State Representative, 38th Legislative District, noted he had done a good job of maintaining quality in Olympia. He had campaigned on health care, job development and education. He spoke about the quality of life in the area. He noted he wouldn’t get another opportunity to campaign. Even though he would not get the opportunity, he will have the opportunity to help win the seat. “I am one of you,” he noted. He then endorsed Mike Sells for the 38th District, House, Position 2 seat in the State Legislature.

 

STAFF REPORT

 

The Secretary-Treasurer reported on activities with the NASCAR track and the ASARCO clean-up spear headed by the Everett Housing Authority. 

 

Puget Sound Labor Agency-Suzanne Moreau  talked about the Solidarity Night activities, the Labor Agency Golf Tournament, Day of Caring at Stillaguamish thrift shop, Red Cross needs in Florida,  AFL/CIO Voting Rights program.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

Community Services-Don Shove encouraged delegates to bringing non perishable food items for the next couple of meetings to help the foodbanks.

 

Organizing- Paul Quaintance noted the committee would be meeting tomorrow.

 

COPE

 

            Secretary Treasurer Sells gave a primary election results report

            Don Shagam, ATU 883, thanked the Council for its support on the transit issue. He talked about outreach and help from City Council members in the campaign. Mailings went to 3 of 4 and 4 of 4 voters. Community spirit and knowledge was helpful in getting it passed.

            Dave Kurtz, noted that Superior Court races were over. Labor support certainly helped for the two labor endorsed candidates: Michael Downes and Eric Lucas.

            Labor/Neighbor, Chris Glenn noted that the focus will be on the 10th, 38th and 44th with the 1st being dealt with out of Bothell. They will continue walking every weekend. He introduced Bob James who is also helping. He thanked those unions that have turned out for support.

REPORTS OF UNIONS

 

Organizing Reports- IBT 38, Leonard Kelley noted that they had won 13 to 9 at Evergreen Manor. He also discussed a California Court ruling on the fact the employees are not independent contractors. The door has opened it for organizing of FedEx employees.

 

Contract Negotiations-

 

Other Local activities-Rod Sigvartson, IAM 751C, reported on the joint IAM/SPEEA registration drive. It has been pretty successful at the Boeing Plant. At this point they have registered about 750.

           

NEW BUSINESS-None

 

M/S/C to give $675.00 from separate COPE Segregated funds to the Mike Sells for State Representative campaign.

 

GOOD OF THE ORDER

 

Don Shagam, ATU 883 noted that the ATU Legislative Council, has now endorsed Mike Sells for the general election and will be sending a donation.

 

Ed Triezenberg, UBC 562, reported that the Carpenters’ had purchased advertising with the Silvertips Hockey Organization and thanked Jim Smith for helping create the radio commercials that will be airing soon on KRKO.

 

D.J. Wilson, reported on a phone call on the upcoming Gregoire campaign on an event in Seattle.

 

Jim Smith, LIUNA 292 talked about the resource of the Labor Radio Journal: KSER 90.7 FM. 4:30 to 5:30 PM the last Monday of every month.

 

Darrell Chapman reported that Joe Murphy and his brother Jim have been missing for 3 days on a plane trip in Alaska. He asked for prayers for them and their families.
