Minutes of the Meeting of September 27, 2007

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by President Chapman followed by the flag salute and the reading of the meeting purpose. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as typed and handed out.

M/S/C to seat the new delegates who were present. The following new delegates were sworn in: Tim Geraghty, Kat Overman, Bob Zappone.

 

GUESTS

 

            Curt Williams, SEIU 1199NW, delegate to the Labor Council gave a power point presentation on cost containment and Providence Medical expansion in Snohomish County. SEIU 1199NW is questioning Providence’s commitment to cost containment. Ed Triezenberg, Carpenters 562 stated that the new Providence project in Everett was being built union, and they would be concerned about anything that might negatively impact that.

 

EXECUTIVE BOARD

 

            Secretary-Treasurer Sells referred to the Executive Board minutes and noted to the delegates he would be happy to respond to any questions regarding actions taken or discussions that ensued at the Executive Board on September 19th.

            The COPE Committee did interview Lorrie Towers, a candidate for Everett District Court Judge.

 

SCLC COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

Organizing: Leonard Kelley, Teamsters 38, reported on the committee’s activity last Saturday at the Everett Holiday Inn. Employees there received information on the benefits of belonging to a union. As a follow up, they are sponsoring a sit-in on October 4th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

 

REPORTS OF UNIONS

 

Organizing—Leonard Kelley, Teamsters 38, gave an update on the charges filed with the NLRB against Durham Transportation on the recent election in Everett. He noted that the local is working with Teamsters 117 on Puget Sound Blood Bank employee organizing. The PSBB after one brief contact by the union of some employees, closed down for one day and hauled all their employees to an anti-union captive audience meeting in Seattle.

            Jon Holden, IAM 751, reported on filing Honda in Kirkland for a bargaining election.

 

Contract Negotiations--Randy Kurtz, WFSE 948, reported that members had accepted a contract offer from the State by a 95% yes vote. He asked that legislators support it when it comes before the legislature.

 

Other local activities--Bob Rommel, SPEEA/IFPTE 2001, reported that Bob Gorman had been hired for their organizing staff. Two new business representatives were hired, also: Frank Guglielmo, and Laura Wentworth.

            John Cunningham, IBEW 77, reported that the local had endorsed Kathy Vaughn for the current PUD Commissioner position up for election. Ms. Vaughn is running for re-election.

            John Noble, UBC 562, reported on the Carpenters standards campaign they are currently working on to educate people about wage and benefit standards for the community.

            Tim Geraghty, AFSCME 1811PA noted their support for Lorrie Towers.
            Patty Goins, AFSCME 113, noted that the court clerks in their local voted to support Lorrie Towers.

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

            M/S to endorse Kathy Vaughn for PUD Commissioner. (In accordance with our Constitution, the motion will be voted on at the October 25th meeting.)

            M/S to have a dual endorsement for Tam Bui and Lorrie Towers for Everett District Court Judge (In accordance with our Constitution, it will be voted on at the next meeting.)

 

GOOD OF THE COUNCIL

 

            Suzanne Moreau, PSLA, reported on fund raising activity over the last several months, labor participation in the United Way Day of Caring, and upcoming holiday fundraising.

            Jeffrey Callies, Chase Home Finance Union Mortgage Consultant Area Coordinator, introduced the Union Plus mortgage program to delegates.

            Steve Hobbs, Labor Endorsed Candidate for State Senate in the 44th District thanked the Council for its support. He felt that he could not have won it without the support of labor. He will be needing help in a tough race, but plans to give it everything. He noted his opponent is having a fundraiser with Dino Rossi and Mike McGavick.

            Lorrie Towers, Candidate for Everett District Court Judge, spoke to the delegates about her background, including some administrative judge work in several county cities. She also discussed plans for improving processes in city court.

            Jackie Boschok, IAM 751, invited delegates to participate in the Sunday, October 15th Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Bellevue.
