Minutes of the Meeting of June 27, 2007

 

The meeting was called to order at 6 PM by President Chapman. The flag salute and meeting purpose reading followed. Minutes: M(Randy Kurtz)/Second(Donna Chrisman) to approve the minutes as typed and handed out. The motion carried. Bob Rommel, SPEEA, was appointed to the Vice President's chair. Toni Bohan, SEIU 925 was appointed Secretary Pro Tem.

M(Randy Kurtz)/S(Curt Eidem) and carried to seat the delegates who were present. The delegates listed above were sworn in.

 

Executive Board


Acting Vice President Bob Rommel read the Executive Board report regarding recent actions and activity including recent COPE Screening Committee actions and concerns with the Everett Public Facilities District, the State Labor Council Convention delegate, RTID, child care organizing and potential changes with local Labor Councils in the state.

COPE Screening made the recommendations which came to the body. As a result, the following actions were taken:

 

M/S/C to endorse Don Hopkins for Everett Port Commission

M/S/F to recommend endorsement of Mark Hintz for an open House appointment in the 44th Legislative District

M/S/F to recommend endorsement of Lillian Kaufer for an open House appointment in the 44th Legislative District

M/S/C to recommend endorsement to the WSLC of Darrell Chapman for an open House appointment in the 21st Legislative District

M/S/C to take no action in Everett City Council, Pos. 7 until after the primary.

M/S/C to endorse Charlene Rawson for Everett City Council, Pos. 4

M/S/F to endorse D.J. Wilson for Edmonds City Council, Pos. 5

 

Reports of Local Unions

 

Organizing--Toni Bohan, SEIU 925 reported on concerns with child care organizing raised by the YMCA Director. A meeting is being scheduled with him. Curt Williams, SEIU 1199NW reported on organizing at Airlift NW. They received a higher than 70% interest and PERC has recognized them as the bargaining unit. They are now beginning contract talks. Phedra Quincey, AFSCME 1020 reported that they had had no luck in talking with County Executive Reardon with regards to stopping the privatization of Employment Security in this county.

 

Contract Bargaining--Donna Chrisman, SEIU 925 reported that they had a tentative agreement with Marysville School District

Local Activities—Phedra Quincey, AFSCME 1020 reported that members from Skagit, Whatcom and Snohomish Counties would be having a BBQ in Marysville of July 21st at the Comfort Park. Any delegate of the SCLC is invited to be there from 11 to 3. There will be events for the kids. This is to celebrate the new contract from the State.

Unfinished Business

 

The chair noted that floor motions from the last meeting were covered by actions under Executive Board/COPE reports.

 

Good of the Order

Travis Patterson, IBEW 191 thanked the House of Labor and community of Everett for their support with his sonšs illness. His son is currently home recuperating from a bone marrow transplant. It is not over yet, but he is doing better. He would like to see the locals organize a bone marrow drive.

 

Liz Loomis, 44th Legislative District candidate thanked the Council for its support.

 

Rhonda Nichols, AFSCME 948 thanked President Chapman for attending the Kessler funeral. He was the IBEW member killed at Wild Waves.

 

Charlene Rawson, Candidate for Everett City Council, Position 4, thanked the Council for its support. There were letters in the back of the room with information on the candidacy available. She promised to "always be there for you."

 

Frederick Bletzen, Candidate for Everett School District #2, Board of Directors introduced himself and noted to delegates that he wanted to bring a new perspective to the Board.

 

Curt Eidem, WashTec, announced the Snohomish County Democrats' picnic at the Tulalip Amphitheatre. It begins at 11 AM on July 21st.

Jim Finnis, Financial Toolbox works with Teamsters Local 38 on a program that explains credit scores. It can save hundreds or thousands in your budget every year. It is a free program, and he invites locals to get together with him.
